How was the survey conducted?

The 2025 Wake Up Survey, conducted by Edelman Data x Intelligence in partnership with Nestlé Starbucks At Home, gathered insights from 1,051 U.S. adults to understand morning habits. The survey took place from January 22 to Jan. 29, 2025, and ensured a diverse mix of participants across gender, age, region and ethnicity. And you’ll find that the data they found—including how 87% of Americans would rather wake up to the smell of coffee than their alarm—is quite fun to know. 

What is the trade some coffee lovers are willing to make?

Whether you’re Gen X, a Millennial or Gen Z (the first generation to grow up fully immersed in the digital world), social media is likely a big part of your routine. But guess what? Coffee lovers might just be willing to put their phones down for their morning cup of joe.

According to the survey, over a third of U.S. coffee drinkers (36%) say they would ditch checking social media in the morning if it meant keeping their coffee. And when it comes to extra sleep, surprisingly, younger generations are even more willing to unplug—59% of Gen Z and 58% of Millennial coffee drinkers would give up social media for the day if it meant staying in bed longer, compared to 42% of Gen X and just 25% of Boomers.

And here’s the kicker—17% of coffee drinkers say that making or drinking coffee is the very first thing they do after waking up, ranking higher than scrolling or posting on social media. Now that’s some serious coffee devotion!

What else would coffee drinkers give up for coffee?

For coffee lovers, their morning cup isn’t just a routine—it’s a non-negotiable ritual. In fact, 92% of coffee-drinking Americans have their first sip within an hour of waking up, and 78% don’t even wait 30 minutes. With coffee being such a motivator, it’s no surprise that some would skip showering (11%), their skincare routine (9%) or even brushing their teeth (8%)—all in the name of coffee, too. 

What other facts did the survey find?

Beyond discovering which addictive habits American coffee drinkers are willing to give up, this survey uncovered more fascinating insights about their love for coffee. Here are more fun coffee facts:

  •  75% intentionally remember how their loved ones take their coffee as a way to show they care, and 73% say they feel loved when someone remembers their order.
  • 77% of coffee drinkers see being served coffee in bed as a true act of love.
  • 79% say they need something in their coffee, whether it’s flavor or cream sugar, rather than drinking it black.
  • 65% of coffee drinkers say sharing a morning cup with someone strengthens their bond, with men being more likely than women to feel connected to those who drink coffee the same way (72% vs. 60%) and believe that sharing a morning coffee is key to connection (71% vs. 60%).
