The best engagement wishes

A few months ago, I was taking a contemporary dance class when a man did a particularly artful pirouette before dropping to one knee in front of his partner. We all watched with glee as he said yes! I’d never met either gentleman before that moment, but there I was, sobbing and hugging them with everyone else. That’s the power of an engagement! It’s such a joyful and momentous event that even strangers can’t help but be overcome with love—and it’s even better when you actually know the couple. Of course you want to send some sweet engagement wishes, but what should you say?

As an etiquette writer for more than a decade, I can tell you two things: First, you should never miss an opportunity to celebrate someone else’s joy. Second, expressing your happiness is not particularly difficult (unlike, say, knowing what to write in a bereavement card). “Writing a heartfelt engagement wish is sending a blessing to the new couple, wishing them love, joy and happiness as they enter this new stage of life,” says etiquette expert Kelly Browne, who specializes in note writing. “Whether you are sending an engagement card through the mail or a text or an email wishing your heartfelt congratulations, it is always appreciated.”

What to write in an engagement card

Not sure where to start? Browne suggests following these steps:

  1. Write the date on a handwritten card. (Texts and emails are automatically dated.)
  2. Start with a greeting, like “Dear,” and then each person’s name.
  3. Write something heartfelt, funny, sweet or thoughtful.
  4. End with a closing based on your relationship. For example, “Sincerely yours” for a friendly acquaintance or “Love” for a loved one.
  5. Sign your name.

Yes, there’s a little more to it than that—you need some perfectly worded engagement congratulations! Ahead, you’ll find 120 of them, from sweet and sentimental to funny, for every type of couple.
